About and sources
Today in the Church answers one question at a glance: what is today in the Catholic Church? It shows the day’s saint or feast with its rank and liturgical colour, which rosary mysteries to pray, whether today is a day of fasting or abstinence, and whether it is a holy day of obligation, for the United States.
How it works
Every page is computed from the liturgical calendar and the rules below each night. Nobody writes the daily pages by hand, and there are no AI-written explanations. The rules are checked by an automatic test against known dates before every update; if a check fails, the site is not updated.
Sources
- Calendar for the dioceses of the United States: romcal, cross-checked with the USCCB liturgical calendar.
- Fasting and abstinence: USCCB, Fast and Abstinence; USCCB Pastoral Statement on Penance and Abstinence (1966); Code of Canon Law, canons 1250–1253.
- Holy days of obligation: USCCB complementary norm to canon 1246.
- Rosary steps, seasonal custom and the fruit of each mystery: USCCB, How to Pray the Rosary.
- Rosary mysteries by day: St John Paul II, Rosarium Virginis Mariae, §38.
- Scripture on the mystery pages: the Douay-Rheims Bible (Challoner revision, public domain). The “fruit” of each mystery follows the USCCB’s list; traditional lists vary a little between sources.
- Daily readings: we link to the USCCB, which publishes them.
What it doesn’t cover yet
Rules here are the general US norms. Your bishop may grant a dispensation (for example on St Patrick’s Day), and a few provinces keep different dates. When in doubt, check your diocese or ask your parish.
